A former Jesuit priest who allegedly tried to cover up a sex scandal involving children has been sentenced to two years in prison for his part in the scandal.

Francis, who led the Catholic Church for 20 years before becoming pope, is also on trial for his handling of the scandal involving a priest who had sex with minors.

The pope is accused of failing to protect children from sexual abuse.

The judge in the case, Jorge Bautista Cordero, described Francis as a “serial violator” of the church’s rules and policies when he sentenced him on Monday to two-and-a-half years in jail, according to local media reports.
